Can We Wear Makeup When Acne Breakouts?

Wearing makeup when you are experiencing acne is indeed a dilemma; you are often stuck between covering up the acne and not wanting to exacerbate acne inflammation. Actually, is it permissible to wear makeup when you have acne?

Basically, if you are experiencing inflammatory acne, wearing makeup is not recommended since makeup products tend to clog pores, which can slow down the healing process or make acne worse. For some people, makeup products can even cause new pimples or commonly known as acne cosmetica, the pimples that are triggered by using facial make-up.

However, wearing makeup has become an obligation for some people. It could be because of work, or because of some conditions. So, can you wear makeup on acne-prone skin? The answer is yes. However, you should choose your makeup products carefully and also take extra effort to minimize the growth of acne.

Here are tips for those of you who need to wear makeup when you have acne:

  • Choose carefully and pay attention to the makeup products that will be used. You definitely want to use cosmetic products that don't cause new pimples. Therefore, the best strategy is to read all labels on your cosmetic products. For those of you who have acne-prone skin, make sure you choose a product that is oil-free, does not clog pores, or is non-comedogenic.

  • Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser, or after finishing activities that make you sweat. Experts recommend that you wash your face when you wake up and also before going to bed. Don't forget to use oil-free and non-comedogenic products.

  • Remove facial make-up, including eye make-up, before going to bed. Use the first makeup remover, such as milk or oil cleanser to loosen facial makeup. After removing makeup, the second step is to wash the face with a mild facial cleanser. Remember, avoid scrubbing your face, even when doing first cleansing. Please be gentle with the skin to prevent further damage.

  • Clean your makeup brushes weekly and make sure you are the only one using them (don't share). Even though acne isn't contagious, acne is caused by bacteria, dead skin cells, and oils. Hence, the bacteria or residue from people's skin may stick to the cosmetics, makeup brushes, or applicators they use. So, it's very important to ensure the cleanliness of your makeup tools and make sure only you are using them.

  • Get checked and treat your acne. Usually, acne cosmetica will disappear when you stop using cosmetic products that clog pores. However, if the acne is still growing and getting worse, check your skin condition to the nearest dermatologist.

Because wearing makeup has become a lifestyle that can't be separated, it would be better to pay attention to small things like re-reading the contents and cleaning your makeup tools regularly. If the pimples you experience are still persistent, it's time for you to go see a specialist.
